Nurture Provision

As a Nurturing School, our sessions help to identify and support children’s social, emotional and behavioural needs. We work closely with classroom teachers to assist each child with overcoming any barriers to their learning that may prevent them thriving in a large class. These may include being quiet and withdrawn, having low confidence and self-esteem or difficulties listening and working with others. There may be many complex reasons for these barriers, but in all cases spending some time in ‘The Caterpillar Room’ will be of great benefit to the child and their family. The ultimate goal of Nurture is to help children to become engaged, confident and successful learners in their classrooms and the school community.

The Caterpillar room provides a safe and secure environment for our Nurture sessions, which take place in small groups of no more than ten children. The small group size enables the children to benefit from 1:1 interaction with staff and other children and enjoy a much quieter learning space. In this space, the children are encouraged to be themselves and to express their thoughts and feelings openly.

The room aims to replicate a homely space; it has a beautiful and comfortable rug, a sensory snug, a calm corner, a small world and role play area, a construction zone and a kitchen area to prepare food and enjoy snack time together. We also have an outdoor space with an outdoor reading bench, a water tray and a sand pit. In addition, we are creating an outdoor garden space for planting flowers and herbs, which the children can enjoy looking after and attending to.

Are parents/carers involved?
If you wish to speak with Miss Dale or arrange a meeting, please do not hesitate to contact the school office. Alternatively, the Nurture room will be open for parents to come and speak to Miss Dale face-to-face every Wednesday between 15:15 and 16:00. We greatly appreciate your support and understand that working together is the best way forward. Our parent Christmas activities afternoon was a great success and moving forward we look forward to inviting you for other special events or simply a tea and a chat.
